Astronomy Report – 08-09-21 – What Went Wrong the 24th

Spent the evening working out what went wrong on the 24th with PC control.  At first I thought it might have been a power problem with Orion Dynamo Pro.  Voltage being applied to the mount was 10 volts and the docs said 11 volts was minimum.  I tried using a car jump batter that was providing 11.5 volts, still nothing so that ruled out power.  I actually had it working back in June but obviously had forgotten what I had done.  I spent the next hour searching the Internet for clues to what the issue might be.  Most everything was talking about connecting the PC using a serial to USB cable to the hand controller via it’s serial connection, however mine has a USB port on it.  I stumbled across a post on Cloudy Nights that talked about the newer version of the EQ6-R Pro that had USB port and the mount that had a USB port on it, mine!

I spent the next hour figuring out just how to connect it all up.  I took the hand controller completely out of the picture and connected the PC directly to the mount.  Confirmed ASCOM drives were loaded on the PC and configured.  I then brought up Syn Scan Pro and it connected.  Stellarium was next, configured the telescope to External Software, it connected and slewed.  Note that I had to hold the ctrl or alt key and the telescope number down for a second or two before the mount responded.  Part of my problem was that on the PC, nothing was an immediate response since I was connected just like I would be in the field, my laptop and the mount PC connected to my phone’s hotspot then I connect via remote terminal, hence the slow response.  I can think of ways to speed that up but that’s not my focus tonight, the tech in me always comes out.  Next was PHD2 Guiding, configured for SynScan App and connected. All in all, a good night.
